How to Protect Your Deck in the Summer

We all love sitting out on our decks during the summer. When the weather is nice, there’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of your backyard than sitting out on your deck!

As you well know, our dramatic New York weather will eventually wreak havoc on your beautiful natural wood deck. In order to keep it looking its best, there are a few strategies that we recommend. This regular TLC will keep your deck in good repair, and combat the need for large-scale repairs.

#1: Annual Cleaning Is A Must

Unfortunately, natural wood grows mold and mildew. This causes deterioration and eventually the whole structure will become compromised. We recommend a good scrubbing with a deck cleaner to remove mold, mildew, and dirt. Plus, a good cleaning can restore the shine!

An extremely effective method for deck cleaning is to power wash it! Keep in mind, if you decide to go with this option, it’s best to leave it to the pros.

Power washing effortlessly removes dirt, grime and mildew. The reason we suggest leaving this to us is that it can just as easily remove paint and scar your surface. Our painters are trained to power wash so you can rest assured that we will do the job correctly.

#2: Keep Your Deck Clean

Debris, particularly leaves, collect in the corners of decks. This is a perfect place for moisture to collect and seep into your deck. Moisture will seriously damage the natural wood and can cause rot.

Your deck was built in a way that allows it to drain. This keeps moisture at a minimum and wood rot at bay. Help this process along by keeping your deck clear.

#3: Routine Staining & Sealing

Freshly stained and sealed decks always look beautiful. The gloss and rich colors will create a focal point in your yard. Beyond aesthetics, this process provides essential protection against wood rot, insects, UV damage, moisture intrusion and more.

Although you might think it is best to stain and seal your deck after the finish is in bad repair, it is best to keep up with routine staining and sealing before damage occurs.

#4: Buy The Right Rug

Many homeowners enjoy putting beautiful rugs out on their decks. These outdoor rugs add an element of style and protect the deck from the wear and tear of the deck furniture.

Keep in mind that you don’t want moisture to collect under your rug and rot your deck! Recycled plastic rugs are not only great for the environment, but they’re also a great choice since they don’t absorb moisture!
