If you have ever tackled this particular project yourself, you know that bathrooms are a tough room to paint! Not only do they have a lot of angles and features to work around, but there also are demands placed on your surfaces unlike those placed on almost any other room in your home. Your kitchen’s paint gets a workout too, but that’s a story for another day”¦
We recently discovered a question about which paint sheen to use in a bathroom on a popular home improvement forum. We answered it there, then thought, why not answer it on our own blog for your benefit too?
What Do You Need from Your Bathroom’s Paint?
Here are just a few attributes that we can safely assume you value:
- Durability
- Easy to clean
- Moisture resistant
- Bright and fresh
- Possibly resistant to mold and mildew (more on this below!)
How well your paint lives up to the list above depends on the sheen you choose. If “sheen” is a foreign or fuzzy concept, click on over to this particle article: Which Paint Sheen Is Best? Tips for House Painters.
For your bathroom (without knowing every detail), we would suggest an eggshell or semi-gloss paint. It will offer valuable durability and strength, a little bit of shine, but also be forgiving of any surface imperfections. It’s a friendly product that works hard.
Do You Need Paint that Resists the Growth of Mold and Mildew?
While these products can offer tangible benefits, they typically aren’t necessary if your bathroom has good ventilation. Run your fan, keep the air circulating, and you should be just fine. Problems tend to arise when it’s a completely closed space without a fan that experiences heat, humidity, and moisture on a consistent basis.
