Remove Popcorn Ceilings

If your home has popcorn texture on the ceilings, there is a good chance you’ll want to get rid of it. The process is messy, but not very difficult. Many homeowners in our part of New York and Connecticut are seeking to remove popcorn ceilings for a number of reasons.

Why Remove Popcorn Ceiling Texture?

– It is out of date! Popcorn ceilings were popular for a number of decades, but the smooth look is now in style, and it looks like it will stay that way.

– It’s hard to clean. How many times have you gone to swipe away a cobweb and it just got stuck in the ceiling texture?

– It can’t be painted other colors. The current trend is to paint your ceiling in a way that coordinates with the rest of the room. But a popcorn ceiling is not an appropriate surface for that.

Why Keep a Popcorn Ceiling?

– If your ceiling is very uneven, it is probably not a good candidate for painting anyways. Also, the texture may be a good way of hiding some blemishes.

– Your ceiling texture could contain asbestos or lead paint. The process of removing the texture would be hazardous to an unprepared homeowner.

– If you are waiting for this look to be in style again, go ahead and keep it! It may be a long shot, but you never know!

How to Remove Popcorn Ceiling Texture

Use lots of tape and plastic to protect your walls, furniture, floors and fixtures. Use a spray bottle to thoroughly soak the texture, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then use a wide-bladed putty knife to scrape the texture off the ceiling. Work in small patches of three or four feet square, then move on to another spot.

Once the texture is off, you will probably need to do some spackling to patch up gouges or nail holes. Make sure to get the surface smooth again, and let it all dry thoroughly before you paint.

If your home was built before the mid 1980’s, consider hiring a professional painting contractor to do the work, since they will be prepared to deal with any lead or asbestos issues.
